2.30pm & 7.30pm Suffolk Libraries Presents: Maxine Peake as Hamlet

At Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmunds Hall

Shakespeare's most iconic work, Hamlet explodes with big ideas and is the ultimate story of loyalty, love, betrayal, murder and madness.

From its sell-out run at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre comes a film version of this unique and critically acclaimed production of HAMLET with BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake in the title role. This groundbreaking stage production, directed by Sarah Frankcom, was Royal Exchange s fastest-selling show in a decade.

Alongside Maxine Peake as the eponymous prince, a number of other roles, including Polonious and Rosencrantz, are also played by women. HAMLET is brought to cinemas by film director Margaret Williams, whose Written on Skin (Royal Opera House/BBC) won many awards including the Diapason d'Or. The film is produced by Anne Beresford and Debbie Gray, the team behind the highly successful cinema broadcast of Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach which Margaret also directed.

(Happisburgh Lighthouse, Norfolk, NR12 0PY)

10:30am-4pm Open Day

Happisburgh Lighthouse is the oldest working light in East Anglia, and the only independently run lighthouse in Great Britain.

Built in 1790, orginally one of a pair - the tower is 85ft tall and the lantern is 134ft above sea level.

The 'low light' which was discontinued in 1883 was 20ft lower and the pair formed leading lights marking safe passage around the southern end of the treacherous Haisborough Sands.

Today the lighthouse is painted white with three red bands, and has a light charcteristic of 3 white flashes, repeated every 30secs with a range of 18 miles.

Saved as a working light by the local community, it is maintained and operated entirely by voluntary contributions.

The lighthouse is open to the public on occasional Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout the summer.

Adults £3; Children (16 and under) £1.

We regret that children under 1 metre in height are not able to climb the 112 steps to the lantern.

A sensational new dance event for cinemas from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne.

Loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera, Carmen, with one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in classical music, the familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.
